The obstacles to One’s Education in the way towards free thinking and creativity and the possible ways to overcome these.
Dead Poet’s Society, Mona Lisa Smile and Three Idiots are sort of inspirational movie which nearly taught about how the education should be applied better. Refer to the aim of education quoted by Jean Piaget, he said the principle goal of education in the schools should be creating men and women who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done; men and women who are creative, inventive and discoverers, who can be critical and verify, and not accept, everything they are offered. Through the message from Jean Piaget about education, those movie are considerably to be well enough in encapsulating the main idea of education’s goal. While people tend to think poverty is one of the insurmountable obstacle to education, actually that belief could use some pushback due to the fact that there is a higher major obstacle towards free thinking and creativity which is highly considered to be cleared up as soon as possible; the mental blocking by teacher in education system. A mental block is either a repression of painful thoughts, or an inability to continue a train of thought (wikipedia, 2008). It can happen to anybody at anytime especially students who are given a duty to learn so much things. As a human, student is a work in a progress of a trantitional being. Studies confirmed that humans are still striving to rise above the animal origins dominated by physical needs and vital urges to become fully human being characterized by civilized behaviour, cultured emotions and a rational mentality. Based on that learning, every students as a human should be a pioneer of the transition representing one stage in the emergence of modern person from a socially dependent member of the collective to be mentally awakened and physically developed individuality. To be in this stage, free thinking and creativity of students is crucially needed through the process. Free and creative thinking is defined as a process boils down to change the perspective in seeing a thing differently than we currently do (Brian Clark, CEO of Copyblogger Media). Actually, students are acknowledged to already capable of free and creative thinking at all times. However, there is an imaginary mental blocks that undirectly formed by the teacher while making the circumstance of studying. Teacher who is considered to be the window of knowledge, playing an important role in educationing students, as a person who is mastering everything in their dicipline field and the subject-matter-expert, they still need to give some spaces for student in learning. Moreover, teacher should not just be a teacher but also a mentor who educate the students. Besides manner that should be considered just as important as other subjects, teacher should also prompt students to explore their potential for change rather than dutifully accepting the tradional viewes of an institution where education is viewed merely as a stopgap before working or marriage. If we refer to those three inspirational movie, we will find some similarities about the condition of the education which is briefly presented. In Dead Poet’s Society, the students are conservatively told about the meaning of a poem as if it measureable as a math problem due to the information written in the book. While in the other movie, Mona Lisa Smile, the students were adapted in memorizing every information inside the books which made Katherine (the teacher) had the desire to provoke the students to think for themselves and arrive at their own of judgements of things, similarly like Adrianne Rich has stated in her commencement that education should be claimed not received. The way their study which is formed by the education system and teacher at that time is like an imaginary mental blocks in learning for student. Students are often told to think out of the box as an advice to think freely and creatively. However, it is already a fault to think that way because creating an imaginary boxes is simply an obstacle towards free thinking and creativity itself. Albert Einstein once has quoted that creativity is intelligence having fun and education is not the learning of facts but the training of the mind to think. This is all said that teacher has an influential role in forming how the education should be applied to students. Brian Clark on his article has summarized 10 mental blocks to creative thinking that every teacher and student should know in order to overcome towards this educational problem. One of the crucial barrier is students are often faced with a task for finding the correct answer to particular question or problem. This learning process that has been done for many years has formed the way of students thinking into white and black perspective which can lead them to be a prejudice person because the mindset is formed to see if something is not right, there is no other word instead wrong. Clark also stated that it is not needed to avoid ambiguity in learning because in real life issues is like that also. There are always more than one “correct” answer and the second one we come up with might be better than the first. Carpe Diem; Seize The Days; Make Our Lives Extraordinary are some main message given from Dead Poet’s Society. Become a free thinker means having a bravery of taking risk of being wrong. Students are often afraid of being wrong because they considered it as a bad and risky thing. However, rather than avoid students to go down the road to find out the dead end, teacher should free the students to make mistake in the first place because the best lesson is learning from the mistake as an experience. Last but not least, there is a thing that should be collaborated by both teacher and student for overcoming to the obstacle toward education; supporting the mindset of students that they are the free and creatie thinker. Here the teacher should take part as a motivator to awaken the students that they are inherently creative. Creating the limits with the way students think that they are not creative is definitely not an appropriate way of stripping away all of the dellusions. So, the student should stop to think they are not the free thinker and creative and in the other hand teacher should support them in any ways that they could do.
